Happiness isn’t actually very complicated. We have been brainwashed to think that it is this hard mountain that we need to climb. Something that we need to aspire towards and pursue.
The truth however is completely different — as different as chalk and cheese.
Happiness is an inside job. You have within you, at all times the elixir of happiness which you need to get back in touch with!
All you need is 5 minutes to boost your happiness. Got 5 minutes? Then read on . . .
Turn Up The Music Of Life
I am sure you have songs that you listen to when you are in an upbeat mood or when you want to get a lift. Most of those are less than 5 minutes long. You can probably bust out some moves as well to get the energy in your body flowing!
When did you last listen to a song that made you bring the funk out? Maybe bust out some moves or bring a smile to your face? Or perhaps it reminds you of the good times in your life. Better yet, it makes you reminisce some good memory
I have a song for every road trip. I have a song that reminds me of driving in the valleys of California and then one for when we got stopped by the police. One for the beautiful drive on highway 1 from Los Angeles to San Francisco and another that I smoked up to while driving from D.C. to Chicago.
My happy list? Here are some songs that make me want to dance with joy
Don’t You Worry Child by Swedish House Mafia (3:34)
Daddy Cool by Boney M. (3.28)
Happy by Pharell Williams (3.53)
Thrift Shop by Macklemore (3:55)
Cheap Thrills by Sia (3:32)
Senorita by Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello (3:11)
Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee (3:49)
Sexy and I know It by LMFAO (3:20)
Crank it up and let the happiness recharge you!
Here is some help if you need it:
DO: Create a happy playlist to listen to when you are feeling down and out!
Write 3 Things You Are Thankful For
Well, scientifically speaking, research in the past has indicated that gratitude can have lasting effects as it was found to improve immune system, lower blood pressure and assist in more efficient sleep.
In other words, it will improve your overall happiness quotient.
Take it from a convert who never used to believe in gratitude. I thought it was all a bunch of hogwash but then I decided to give it a go as I had nothing to lose.
Fast forward a couple of years and It has become a habit now, one that I swear by.
Simply putting down what we are thankful makes us realize how much we have! It shifts the focus from what we don’t have, to what we are taking for granted!
In our pursuit for more or better, we forget to be grateful for what currently exists in our lives — our friends, our family, the house we live in, the car we drive, our health and the money we currently earn.
Boy the list is long! But I don’t want to scare you and because we want to keep it short and sweet, so here is my suggestion:
DO: Write three things you are grateful for today.
I am thankful for x because y
I am thankful for my job because it helps me pay the bills.
I must warn you though, to see considerable results, you will need to do this for a few months consistently!
Remarkable and Me?
Yes you! You reading this right now have a lot of qualities that make you unique and remarkable! But you have just decided to look over those qualities and focus on what is missing because the world keeps pointing out your deficiencies!
You have forgotten how [insert qualities here] you are and how that has helped uplift people around you because we live in a world obsessed about self improvement, which constantly likes to remind us that we are not good enough!
When was the last time you gave yourself a high five for being remarkable? Instead of constantly looking for validation from others, why not first sit and self affirm?
DO: Write down all the qualities or attributes that make you a remarkable person.
Embrace The Warmth Of The Sun!
I feel like the sun gets a lot of bad rap. We are scared to go out and expose ourselves because we have been made to believe that it can cause all sorts of cancer. Plus the fact that it makes you sweat and sometimes burns your skin isn’t in its favor either.
What you haven’t realized is this: Some of the words used to describe the sun are also the ones we use to describe someone who is happy or full of joy — Words like Warm, bright, radiant, golden, glorious etc.
Sunlight is not only good for Vitamin D but also increases Serotonin levels in the body. Low serotonin levels mean more anxiety while higher levels mean more joy as serotonin is what you would call a feel good hormone.
Scientifically speaking, getting anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes of sunlight 2–3 times a week is enough to enjoy the benefits of Vitamin D.
DO: Get outside for 5 minutes at least 2–3 times a week! And while you are at it, marvel at yourself. Spread your hands out and look at them closely. Run your hand through your hair and through your legs, just to get in closer touch with your skin and your body. Practice deep breathing for a minute.
First of all, it is F-R-E-E! And when you give someone a compliment, it not only nourishes them, it also affirms and boosts your self-confidence.
One catch, it has to be genuine! Don’t just dish it out for the sake of dishing it out. That will just have an opposite effect. Nobody likes being buttered up! And you won’t like being called a kiss ass!
Need help with the compliments? Here is a list of 100 ready to deliver compliments you can say to someone.
Don’t know how to give someone a compliment? This can help you with that.
Oh and before you decide against doing this, remember what goes around, comes back around! The more you give, the more you get!
DO: Leave a thank you note for a colleague or a friend who might have recently helped you out. This could be done via messaging or post its. Also, don’t hold back on compliments when you feel that you really like something about the other person.
Watch the magic unfold!
