2020 has been a year to remember. Life as we knew it, ceased to exist. No more larger gatherings, no more sharing drinks or food and no more blowing candles on top of a cake!

A lot of us were forced to stay put wherever we were and put all our plans on hold. For some of us, it forced us to re-evaluate the important stuff in our life: Our career choices, our lifestyle, our health and even our habits.

A lot might have changed in 2020 but at the same time, there’s a lot which has remained constant in my life. Every decade demands a different you. But every decade, also has parts which remain the same. Despite all that changes around you, these seem to be enduring.

Like a birthmark, here are some other things that will be a constant in our life in 2021 regardless of how different 2020 was.

Compassion in our lives

I have experienced over 1000 moments of kindness in the last 10 years. Sometimes I was the recipient and sometimes, a donor.

“Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate” ~Albert Schweitzer

Every year, no matter how much I changed or the world around me changed, I came across acts of kindness — A young person helping an old one. A human rescuing a dog or vice versa. Friends sending emojis and lending an ear in response to an anxious friend’s call for help. Hundreds of colleagues coaching underprivileged kids. The World coming together to save our forests!

In 2020, we especially witnessed humanity collectively become kinder. We delivered groceries for the old and sick. We 3D printed masks and distributed them for free. We volunteered to help as and where possible so that we could all collectively survive the pandemic.

I saw it take place in dark alleys, office corridors, shopping malls, flights and on the roadside. I experienced it happening to animals, plants, the underprivileged and the sick amongst us and to perfectly capable humans.

The list is simply endless! And it will continue to be, no matter how much we change!
